BUSINESS MATHEMATICS

Course Overview:

This course is designed to assist students in learning to use mathematics effectively as a tool in their personal and business lives. It is designed to answer the question, When am I ever going to use mathematics in the real world? This course will include topics such as: personal finances, transportation and housing costs, insurance and investments, manufacturing, and marketing. Also, it will reinforce skills in probability, statistics, and logic. Students will use a variety of techniques and appropriate technology to solve real-life problems and situations.

*Projects will be assigned at least twice in a marking period. These projects count for the highest percentage of your grade. Late projects will not be accepted.

Each student will be required to keep a reflection log/ journal in order to further develop mathematical skills and to apply their knowledge of math to understand real-world problems. Also, each student is required to keep all work in a binder. Binders will be checked quarterly for neatness, completeness and organization.

Late work will not be accepted for any reason.

Cheating will not be tolerated. Any student caught cheating will be given a zero for the assignment or examination. This applies to those receiving answers as well as those giving answers.

Attendance is a significant part of your class participation percentage. It is vital to achieve the objectives of this course. Extensive absences will significantly lower your grade. You must bring in a note from your parent on the day of return for all absences. It will not be accepted at any other time. You are responsible for finding out what you have missed while absent. If you know ahead of time that you will be absent, you must get your work in advance in order to receive credit. There will be no makeup exams. Get to class on time. Tardiness will not be tolerated.

Progress reports will be sent out each marking period, more if needed. My conference period is during third hour. If you have any questions about your child, feel free to call at that time.

Tutoring will be offered after school on Tuesdays from 3:15 – 4:15 p.m. If you are having trouble understanding any work, this is time to get extra help. Do not wait until it is too late.

Projects………...40% 90 – 100 A

Tests………...…..30% 89 – 80 B

Quizzes…………..20% 79 – 70 C

Homework……...10% 69 – 60 D

59 – below E

*Supplies needed for this course include:

1. $20 book deposit (refundable when book is returned at the end of the year)

2. 1 binder with lined loose leaf paper

3. 2 or 3 pencils everyday (preferably mechanical pencils)

4. 1 scientific calculator

5. 8 portfolio folders

*Always come to class prepared with the proper supplies, so that the daily task can be completed promptly. Students are required to treat each other and Mrs. Anderson in a respectful manner.
